What comes out of every paycheck

Wherever you work in the U.S., these federal taxes are taken from your pay in 2026:

Tax2026 rateApplies to
Federal income tax10% to 37%Pay after pre-tax deductions and the standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly, $24,150 head of household)
Social Security6.2%Wages up to $184,500
Medicare1.45%All wages, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000

On top of that, most states charge an income tax, and a few (including New Jersey, New York, California and Rhode Island) take employee contributions for disability or family leave insurance. Some cities and counties also tax wages. Nine states have no tax on wages: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.

How our paycheck calculators work

  • They estimate your full-year 2026 tax and divide it evenly across your paychecks.
  • They assume one job, the standard deduction and no tax credits. Your employer’s withholding may differ slightly because it uses withholding tables and your W-4.
  • Every rate comes from the IRS, the Social Security Administration or the state’s revenue and labor departments, listed on each state page, and is reviewed every January.
