How to use the salary to hourly calculator
- Type your pay amount. You can enter it with or without commas.
- Choose how often that amount is paid: per hour, day, week, two weeks, half month, month or year.
- Set the hours you work in a normal week and the number of weeks you are paid each year.
- Press Calculate. The table shows your gross pay for every period, and the steps under it show exactly how each number was worked out.
All results are gross pay, meaning before federal and state income tax, Social Security, Medicare and any deductions such as health insurance or 401(k) contributions. Your take-home pay will be lower.
How to convert salary to hourly
To turn a yearly salary into an hourly wage, divide the salary by the number of hours you are paid for in a year. For a standard full-time job that is 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, or 2,080 hours.
Hourly wage = Annual salary ÷ (Hours per week × Paid weeks per year)
Example: $60,000 a year
$60,000 ÷ (40 × 52) = $60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85 per hour. A quick rule of thumb is to halve the salary and drop the thousands: $60,000 is roughly $30 an hour. The rule slightly overstates the real figure because a year has 2,080 work hours, not 2,000.
How to convert hourly to salary
To go the other way, multiply your hourly rate by your weekly hours and by the number of weeks you are paid.
Annual salary = Hourly wage × Hours per week × Paid weeks per year
Example: $22 an hour
$22 × 40 × 52 = $45,760 a year. If you take two weeks off unpaid, use 50 weeks instead: $22 × 40 × 50 = $44,000.
How each pay period is calculated
- Weekly: hourly wage × hours per week. This is what you earn in a week you work.
- Daily: hourly wage × (hours per week ÷ days per week).
- Biweekly: annual salary ÷ 26, because a year has 26 two-week pay periods.
- Semimonthly: annual salary ÷ 24, for people paid twice a month (often on the 15th and the last day).
- Monthly: annual salary ÷ 12. Months have different numbers of workdays, so this is an average.
Biweekly and semimonthly are easy to mix up. Biweekly pay comes every other week, so you get 26 checks a year and two months each year bring a third check. Semimonthly pay comes twice a month, so you always get 24 slightly larger checks.

Accuracy and limitations
- Results are estimates of gross pay. They do not include taxes, deductions, bonuses, commissions, tips or benefits.
- Overtime is not included. If you work more than 40 hours, extra hours are usually paid at 1.5 times your rate under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, so entering 45 hours here will understate an hourly worker’s pay.
- Salaried employees are often paid a fixed amount no matter how many hours they work. For them, the hourly figure shows what each hour is effectively worth, not a rate they are paid.
- Results are rounded to the nearest cent for display. Calculations use full precision.

Frequently asked questions
How many work hours are in a year?
A full-time schedule of 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours. If you take unpaid time off, subtract those hours. For example, two unpaid weeks leaves 2,000 hours.
Is $20 an hour good for a year?
At 40 hours a week and 52 weeks, $20 an hour is $41,600 a year before taxes. Whether that is enough depends on where you live and your expenses.
Does this calculator include taxes?
No. It shows gross pay before any taxes or deductions. To estimate take-home pay you also need your filing status, your state and your deductions.
How do I convert a monthly salary to hourly?
Multiply the monthly salary by 12 to get the annual figure, then divide by your yearly hours. For example, $5,000 a month is $60,000 a year, which is $28.85 an hour at 2,080 hours.
Why is my biweekly paycheck not exactly half my monthly pay?
A year has 26 biweekly pay periods but only 12 months, so a biweekly check is the annual salary divided by 26, which is a little less than half of a monthly check.
Does the calculator save what I type?
No. The math runs in your browser and the numbers you type are not sent to our server or stored.
