How your Tennessee paycheck is calculated

Because Tennessee doesn’t tax wages, figuring out your take-home pay comes down to three federal taxes and your own deductions:

  1. Federal income tax on your pay after pre-tax deductions and the 2026 standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly, $24,150 head of household).
  2. Social Security at 6.2% of wages up to $184,500.
  3. Medicare at 1.45% of all wages, plus an extra 0.9% on wages over $200,000.

The calculator works out each tax for the full year, then divides by the number of paychecks.

Example: $60,000 a year, single, paid biweekly

ItemPer yearPer paycheck
Gross pay$60,000.00$2,307.69
Federal income tax$5,020.00$193.08
Social Security$3,720.00$143.08
Medicare$870.00$33.46
Tennessee income tax$0.00$0.00
Take-home pay$50,390.00$1,938.08

Federal: $60,000 − $16,100 = $43,900 taxable, which is 10% of the first $12,400 plus 12% of the remaining $31,500 = $5,020. The same job in a state with an income tax would take home less; in New Jersey, for example, it’s about $48,180.

Taxes Tennessee does and doesn’t have

  • No tax on wages. Tennessee has never taxed earned income like salaries and hourly pay.
  • No more tax on investment income either. The Hall income tax, which applied to some interest and dividends, was fully repealed starting with 2021.
  • No employee payroll deductions. Tennessee unemployment insurance is paid by employers, and the state has no disability or family leave payroll tax.
  • High sales tax instead. Tennessee relies on sales tax, with a 7% state rate plus local rates. That affects your budget, but not your paycheck.

Minimum wage in Tennessee

Tennessee has no state minimum wage law, so the federal minimum of $7.25 an hour applies to most jobs. That is $15,080 a year for full-time work before taxes. Tipped employees can be paid $2.13 an hour as long as tips bring them up to $7.25.

Things that change your Tennessee take-home pay

  • Pre-tax deductions. Traditional 401(k) contributions lower your federal income tax. Health, dental and FSA deductions lower your federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare.
  • Working in another state. If you live in Tennessee but work in a state with an income tax, that state can tax your wages. This calculator assumes you work in Tennessee.
  • Your W-4. Extra withholding, a second job or dependents you list on Form W-4 change how much your employer withholds.

Accuracy and limitations

  • This is an estimate of your 2026 federal tax for the year, spread evenly across paychecks. Employers use IRS withholding tables, which can produce slightly different amounts per paycheck.
  • It assumes this job is your only income, and you take the standard deduction. The Child Tax Credit and the credit for other dependents are included when you enter dependents; other credits are not.
  • It doesn’t include bonuses or other income. Overtime is included when you enter it with an hourly wage.

Frequently asked questions

Does Tennessee have state income tax?

No. Tennessee doesn’t tax wages, and the Hall tax on interest and dividends ended in 2021, so there’s no state income tax return for individuals.

How much is $60,000 a year after taxes in Tennessee?

About $50,390 a year, or $1,938 every two weeks, for a single filer with no pre-tax deductions in 2026.

How much is $25 an hour after taxes in Tennessee?

At 40 hours a week, $25 an hour is $52,000 a year. A single filer with no pre-tax deductions takes home about $43,962 a year, or $1,691 every two weeks.

Why is federal tax my biggest deduction?

Without a state income tax, federal income tax and FICA (Social Security and Medicare) are the only taxes on Tennessee paychecks. FICA is a flat 7.65% for most workers.
